Archelaus moved the capital of the kingdom of Macedonia from Aiges to Pella. The city flourished during the successors of Alexander the Great, who brought fabulous treasures from Asia. In the first season of excavations uncovered the Agora, the Palaces, temples, cemeteries and settlements.

Petralona
The cave was discovered by Philip Chantzaridis on May 10th , 1959 and became known for its paleontological and paleoanthropological findings since 1960, after the incidentally discovery in the cave by the resident of Petralona Ch. Sarigiannidou, the famous petrified human skull. The value of the finding and its uniqueness was the reason to begin a series of activities in and out of the cave. The stone and bone findings are very important and are the first evidence of habitation in Greek geographical space.

Amfipoli- Philippi Kavala
In the age of the Macedonians, Amphipolis became a powerful city of the Macedonian kingdom with internal autonomy and an important economic and cultural development. The excavations have revealed much of the walls and some of the temples and private and public buildings in the city.
After the conquest of Macedonia by the Romans (168 BC) Amphipolis defined as the capital of a part of Macedonia.

The next ancient Macedonian city that deserves to be included in a one-day trip is Dion, 15 km after Katerini. The first mention about the city found in Thukidides in 424 B.C and then became a place of worship of the gods of the Macedonians. In Dion Philip celebrated the fall of Olynthus and Alexander made sacrifices before the war against the Persians . The ancient city was surrounded by a wall. It is also worth to see the baths, the temple of Demeter.
