Agia Meteora, the divinely built rocks, Kalambaka-Meteora

In Northwest Thessaly, above Kalambaka, the eerie, huge and dark rocks of Meteora, full of fossilized shells, rise proud and imposing at a height of 400 m - a unique geological phenomenon. In this wild and inaccessible, evocative landscape, between heaven and earth, spreads the second most important monastic complex in Greece, after Mount Athos.

Of the twenty-four monasteries that existed historically, today only six (Agios Nikolaos Anapaussa, Metamorfosis tou Sotiros or Megalo Meteoro, Varlam, Rousanos, Agia Triada and Agios Stefanos) are functioning today, which are excellently organized and renovated with respect for tradition, for six hundred and for more years they continue unwaveringly, without interruption and deviations, genuine and strict testimony of orthodox monasticism.

The holy lithopolis of Meteora has been included in the Unesco World Heritage List since 1988. Make a pilgrimage with us to the meteoric monasteries on the windswept cliffs, a wander through their eventful history.
